Ramadan 2019: Fasting Rules And Tips

Fasting is a great way of healing our bodies, mind, and soul. Undoubtedly, by keeping fast, a person is able to clean his body, mind, and soul from all the impurities of the world, whether physical or spiritual.

In the same way, it has been ordained to the followers of last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) to observe fasting. This can be seen in the light of a verse.

“O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed onto you as it was prescribed onto those before you, that perhaps ye may (learn) self-restraint.” [Surat Al-Baqara, v. 183].

Fasting rules:

1. Abstain from false talks:

It is important for you to abstain from all kinds of false talk and deeds, as they can diminish the reward of keeping a fast. Try not to quarrel or dispute with people around you. It is your duty to behave ethically and morally, especially when you are keeping fast. Avoid every type of discussion that can cause harm to other people.

On the authority of Abu Huraira, The Prophet said,

"Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)”

[Sahih Bukhari. Chapter 31, Fasting, Hadith No: 127]

2. All body parts must fast:

Know that fasting is not just limited to the prohibition of eating food or drinking liquids. But, when you keep fast, the fast should be implemented on all body parts. For instance:

  • Fast of your ear:

Do not hear something that can break your fast. In other words, backbiting in Islam is strictly prohibited. Therefore when you are in the state of fast, it is mandatory for you to avoid backbiting, even listening to it.

  • Fast of your eyes:

Similarly, seeing or watching something that can divert your mind towards negativity is prohibited in Islam. Remember that, in the Holy Quran, there is a great emphasis on protecting eyes from watching anything sinful.

  • Fast of your mind:

Fasting of your mind is controlling your thoughts while you are keeping fast. There are people out there, who have got this misconception that fasting is just related to keeping yourself hungry and thirsty. However, in the true sense, fasting means protecting each and every part of your body from committing any sinful act.

3. No sexual intercourse or contact:

Sexual intercourse or physical contact while keeping fast is prohibited. The significance of this rule is reflected in the following hadith.

On the authority of Abu Huraira, Allah's Apostle said:

"Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting."

[Sahih Bukhari. Chapter 31, Fasting, Hadith No: 118]

Tips For Fasting:

  • A walk is recommended:

People often find themselves sluggish and lazy, right after they are done with Iftar; this bloated feeling leads to health complications. For the purpose of staying fit and active, a walk is recommended to help your stomach digest food after being deprived for long hours.

  • Consume as much liquid as you can:

The best way to rehydrate yourself during Ramadan is the consumption of liquid; liquid can be in any form. For instance, it can be juice, water or beverages. However, water is the best option. Try your level best to take at least 8 glass of water before Suhoor and after Iftar also Try to build an eating plan with sensible quantities of nutritious food; it will be more productive to use a Ramadan planner.

  • Stay in touch with mild exercise:

Although during fasting days, a proper exercise is not possible. However, in order to experience a healthy Ramadan, you must not skip exercise altogether. Yoga, walk, and meditation can be practiced for a few minutes.
