Acne & Periods: Why You Should Let Your Skin Breathe During Shark Week?

Most women have their own “secret” to having clear skin.

However, regardless of your skin type, the best way to keep your skin acne-free doesn’t involve any secret cream or potion: it’s to simply let it breathe.

Find out what causes acne

Acne is a skin condition that usually occurs on the T-zone on your face and forehead, but can also appear on the chest, back and shoulders.

Acne can affect anyone of all ages, but is particularly common in teenagers.

Acne is primarily caused when your pores become clogged with dead skin cells and oils. However, a number of factors can cause acne.

First and foremost on the list is stress. You might have noticed yourself that when you’re feeling particularly tense or under pressure, your acne worsens.

This is also exacerbated if you suffer from depression, or have an irregular sleeping patterns.

Acne is also a symptom of an unhealthy diet. Eating a lot of oily or sugary foods can cause issues with your digestive system, resulting in a build up of toxins.

Other causes include the hair and cosmetic products you use, or even the type of hat you wear.

But unfortunately that’s not all.

Periods and acne

When your period arrives, it brings a whole host of things you need to worry about.

As if stomach cramps and the occasional leak wasn’t bad enough, it can also cause breakouts of acne.

You can deal with stomach cramps with painkillers and a hot water bottle, and you can prepare for leaks with absorbent underwear.

But how do you deal with period-related acne? Well, first and foremost, you need to let your skin breathe.

Breathing is as important for our skin as it is for us. 7% of the oxygen we breathe is used by our skin, and it provides our cells with vital fuel, as well as getting rid of any excess carbon dioxide from our bodies.

Does our skin actually breathe?

Our skin doesn’t actually “breathe” in the sense that it takes in oxygen like we do through our lungs.

This is because there is a dead layer of skin on the surface, and it is the skin below it that requires oxygen.

So what does the cosmetics industry mean by letting your skin breathe?

When skincare manufacturers say that a product lets your skin breathe, they don’t mean it actually ingests oxygen.

They actually mean it is non-comodegenic. This means that it doesn’t block your pores when you wear it, preventing clogging and a build up of dead skin and dirt.

How should I let my skin breathe during my period?

When women wear makeup, creams or lotions that cover up our pores, it can encourage acne to appear and spread.

This doesn’t mean you need to stop wearing makeup altogether. Heaven forbid! But when you do, you need to make sure that you remove it properly before bed.

Be sure to take the time to thoroughly remove every trace of it at the end of each day. It’s also worth washing your face at least twice a day with a deep facial cleanser.

While you don’t need to go entirely makeup free during your period, you might want to consider going without makeup in the week after your period.

This is because during the post-period part of your menstrual cycle, your body produces a higher amount of estrogen.

The release of this hormone hydrates your skin and increases collagen production, making your skin look naturally better. Plus it might not be as bad as you thought, either!

How else can I prevent acne during my period?

While letting your skin “breathe” during your shark week is crucial, there are other things you can do to prevent acne flare-ups during your period as well.

1. Avoid touching your face

We touch our face anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 times a day, often without even realizing we’re doing it.

This is especially true if we work at a desk all day, leaning our faces on our hands and fists.

Unfortunately, this also means that we spread dirt and bacteria across our faces when we do.

Try to make a conscious effort to avoid this, and remember to wash your hands before you apply your makeup.

2. Try birth control

Many of us use The Pill as a form of birth control. However, it can also help reduce the production of excess oil in our skin too.

It works by preventing the natural increase in estrogen and progesterone before we being menstruating, intercepting acne flare-ups before they happen.

However, this effect varies from woman to woman, so be sure to consult with your doctor or pharmacist first.

3. Always shower after exercising

When you exercise, you produce a lot of sweat, natural oils and bacteria that can clog up your pores and rapidly cause and increase breakouts of acne.

As such, you need to make sure you shower thoroughly after a workout, possibly using a body wash developed for acne-prone skin.

While your T-zone is important to focus on, make sure you also cover your chest and back as well.

Be sure to plan your exercise regimen with plenty of time to shower afterwards.

4. Stay hydrated

During your shark week, try to avoid sugary drinks like soda or fruit juices.

Instead, stick to a nice glass of water. Drinking water regularly will help cleanse your body of toxins, flushing out any harmful chemicals that can lead to a flare-up of acne.

5. Change your diet

Just as drinking sugary drinks can affect your acne during your period, so too can your diet.

Avoid foods high in oil, saturated fats and dairy when you’re on your shark week.

Sticking to a vitamin-rich diet with foods such as fish, lean meats, legumes, green leaf vegetables and nuts provide you with the right nutrients you need to combat any acne breakouts.

The bottom line

Periods are a tough time for all of us, especially if we suffer from acne. But you don’t need to take it lying down.

There are plenty of things you can do when your period strikes to prevent bad acne breakouts: staying hydrated, changing your diet, and showering thoroughly after exercising.

But first and foremost amongst these is to let your skin “breathe.”

Clean your makeup off thoroughly before bed, and don’t be afraid to treat yourself to a makeup-free day here and there. It’ll do wonders for your skin.

Top 5 Reasons Why Women Remove Their Breast Implants

by Dr Pankaj Tiwari

First of all, what are implants? Breast implants are prostheses that change the contour, shape, and size of the breasts.

There are three types of implants we should know about, and these are saline, silicone, and gummy bear breast implants.

The implants could be placed by doing either breast augmentation that changes the size of the chest, or breast reconstruction after a mastectomy and other damages.

These implants are also used in revision surgeries to correct and improve the previous result of an operation.

A lot of women are given a better chance of living because of the continuing progress in the field of breast augmentations and breast reconstructions.

But, why do other women ask their surgeon to remove these implants?

5 Reasons Why Women Get Their Implants Removed

It is often said that women in their twenties want to look attractive, but women in their forties want to be practical and look natural.

Women who seek to remove their implants can opt for Explant surgery.

This procedure is for women who are either trying to change their lifestyles or wish to remove their implants due to a number of health-related reasons.

1. Discomfort

Some women seem naturally conscious about the shape of their breasts in the years following surgery.

In some instances, women will choose implants that may be too heavy for their own bodies, and because of this, they may experience regular pain and discomfort.

Other symptoms may include thick scarring that is also noticeable and doesn’t fade, rotation of the implant in the breast, and hardening of the breast tissue due to the shrinking scar tissue around it.

2. Capsular Contractures

Capsular contracture is a breast augmentation complication that develops when the inner scar tissue forms a tight or compressing capsule around a breast implant, constricting it until it becomes misshapen and hard.

Early symptoms include:

  • Increased firmness of the breast
  • An implant that looks distorted or “ball-like”
  • Breast implants that look smaller or does not move around
  • A feeling of tightness around the breast

In addition, the chest may feel painful and stiff, and the capsule will affect the appearance of the breast as a result.

3. Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Breast cancer is the most common case among women. Early-stage breast cancer in breast implants represents a challenging situation.

It starts with a lump, the thickening of the breast and changes in the skin or the nipple.

Keeping implants while going through breast cancer can be painful. The radiation treatment might change the shape of the implants and cause infection.

Instead of getting better, the implants might make the condition much worse.

4. Calcium Deposits in the Breasts

These deposits can form in the scar tissue surrounding the implant and cause pain and firmness.

Though often being mistaken for cancer, these calcifications are small, which makes it hard to find while examining the breast unless through a mammogram.

Taking out the breast implants will not only remove the pain and discomfort, but it will also remove the calcium deposits as well.

5. Breast Implant-Associated – Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma

BIA - ALCL can develop after having breast implants. It can occur on the other parts of the body including the skin and lymph nodes.

The most common symptoms are swelling of the breasts and lumps on the chest or armpits.

These symptoms develop between 3 to 14 years after the breast implants insertion.

However, this is not considered breast cancer even if the BIA – ALCL is found in the breasts of individuals with breast implants.

We could have the lymphoma removed by having an explant surgery. It is worth noting that ALCL is extremely uncommon and seldom found in women.

Implants Will Not Last for a Lifetime

Explant surgery can allow women to restore their bodies to its original shape and contour.

Some women may even decide to undergo the procedure in order to restore movement and improve athletic performance.

So aside from discomfort, there are a number of reasons why many women will consult with a plastic surgeon.

Keep in mind that breast implants are not devices that will last for a lifetime.

If women keep their implants for an extended period, it is more likely for complications to occur which may result in the removal of implants.

Any woman interested in undergoing this surgical procedure must schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

With their years of experience, plastic surgeons are able to provide women with expert guidance in order to give them results that are safe and satisfying.

How Overheating Affects Your Skin and Hair

Hot, humid weather not only feels uncomfortable, it can impact your skin and hair. Skin is the largest organ of the body and helps to regulate a body's temperature. Here are three ways overheating affects your skin and hair.

1. Heat Rash

A rash of small, itchy, red bumps is a classic sign of overheating. Heat rash, as this rash is known, is a patch of red bumps surrounded by red skin. Heat rash appears where sweat glands have become clogged, and the sweat moves out to the skin around the clogged glands.

The rash is itchy, and sometimes can prickle or sting. It is most common underneath clothing where skin gets the warmest, such as the stomach and groin.

You are more susceptible to heat rash on a hot, humid day where you are exercising or doing another activity that causes you to sweat.

The good news is that heat rash alone isn't dangerous. Do not itch the heat rash, which can cause infection. Do move to a location that is cooler, out of the sun, and where your skin can dry out.

2. Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion

Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious conditions, and both are caused by excessive exposure to hot temperatures.

One of the earliest signs of heat exhaustion is a tingling of the skin and goosebumps. From there, the symptoms often move on to nausea and headache, then noticeable confusion and lethargy.

Heat stroke can come on suddenly, without warning, and is a potentially deadly condition. Symptoms include hot, dry skin, vomiting, body temperature over 104 degrees Fahrenheit, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. Heat stroke needs to be treated by a medical professional immediately.

Prevent heat stroke and heat exhaustion by drinking plenty of fluids on hot days and by seeking out locations like an air-conditioned house with cool, circulating air.

3. Humidity and Hair

Have you ever heard a curly-haired friend complain on a high humidity day? Curly hair is particularly reactive to humidity, but all types of hair are impacted when the moisture in the air is above normal. Hair absorbs water, and extra water in the air equals extra water in your hair.

Excess humidity can create curls and frizz in hair where they didn't exist before. Even those who straighten their hair every day, or use products to maintain their smooth locks, will struggle in a humid climate.

To help prevent the frizz (or at least, not make it worse) avoid brushing or touching your hair. Condition your hair regularly and, when you know it is going to be humid, apply an anti-frizz styling product to help block water absorption.

Overheating in hot, humid environments affects both your skin and hair. While sometimes this is simply an inconvenience, such as in the case of frizzy hair, other times it is a symptom of a more serious condition.

Take care of yourself by drinking plenty of water, and seeking out cooler, indoor locations to let your body rest.
